Wiebke Herzog studied Biology at Freie Universität Berlin and the University of Exeter. During her doctoral research at the Max Planck Institute of Immunobiology in Freiburg, she began working on organogenesis in zebrafish. After 4.5 years as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California, San Francisco (UC San Francisco), she established her own research group in Münster in 2008 with a North Rhine-Westphalia returnee fellowship (NRW-Rückkehrerstipendium) and continued to lead the group as a Heisenberg Fellow. At the end of 2020, she was appointed W3 Professor of Developmental Biology at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU).
Her research focuses on vascular development, particularly the mechanisms of cell migration and the formation of the blood–brain barrier. Her group primarily uses zebrafish as a model system, as this allows genetic and molecular biological analyses to be combined particularly effectively with advanced imaging techniques. Her teaching focuses on genetics, cell biology, and developmental biology in Bachelor's, teacher-training, and Master's programs.
